Core Knowledge Language Arts

At McKinley-Thatcher, we utilize the Skills Strand of Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) for phonics instruction. We strive to teach students the mechanics
of reading and writing using a phonics approach. As part of this
strand, students will learn how to hear sounds in words and write “pictures of sounds,” also known as letters.

Key Skills:
-
Hearing and making rhyming words
-
Making and taking apart compound words, e.g. pan----cake=pancake; homework= home-----work
-
Isolating beginning sounds in words
-
Isolating ending sounds in words
-
Counting words in a sentence
-
Connecting sounds to the letters representing that sound

Additionally, we will working on penmanship by using verbal pathways to form the letters as well as building our bank of known words that we can read and write in a SNAP. More information and instructional resources forthcoming in "Resources"
